About Family Compass

Family Compass is a mental health charity based in Barnstaple, North Devon. Their key objective is to help children and families improve their mental health and wellbeing before they reach crisis point.

Over the past five years they have supported hundreds of children, young people and their families, helping them grow in confidence and self-belief, build positive relationships with others and cope when their feelings are overwhelming. Their support has enabled children to feel happier and more resilient, and to reach their potential.

Mental health problems are increasingly affecting children and young adults, which in turn is impacting entire families. Times are particularly tough right now, and Family Compass are seeing an unprecedented number of enquiries from families desperate for support. When parents reach out - sometimes for the first time - it is disheartening, due to a lack of funding, that they are unable to provide the necessary support. Family Compass know that when parents or carers are struggling with their own or their children’s mental health, their family life suffers and their ability to work productively is affected. Timely support is deemed crucial for the well-being of individuals, families, their communities, and society as a whole.

The exceptional team at Family Compass offers a diverse range of support services, encompassing counselling, mentoring, and creative therapies such as art, drama, music, and play. Additionally, they provide family-focused therapies like Life Story Work, crafted to make sense of past experiences. Acknowledging the uniqueness of each child's needs, the charity's approach is tailored to individual requirements. The overarching goal is to extend support to everyone in need, ensuring that no one is turned away during their time of vulnerability.
